Dafne
An opera by Heinrich Schütz to a libretto by Martin Opitz
Dafne (1627) · Heinrich Schütz
Part of Münstermann Festival
In 1627 Heinrich Schütz set Martin Opitz’s “Dafne” for a princely wedding at Torgau — as far as anyone knows, the first opera in the German language. The music is lost; the performances used Roland Wilson’s reconstruction.
On 11 and 12 October 2025 Forum neue Kunst staged the work in the Schlosssaal of Oldenburg Castle — with Ensemble UrgentMusic on period instruments, conducted by Veronika Skuplik, directed by Nicholas Tamagna, with Katrin Schöß’s paintings on stage. It was the association’s first fully professional opera production.
