The association
Forum neue Kunst Oldenburg e. V. was founded in 2021 to produce new and rediscovered music theatre in Oldenburg — with professional artists, in unusual places, for an audience willing to be surprised.
What we do
The association was born in the middle of the pandemic, when the stages were closed and the artists out of work. Since then it has committed itself to three things:
Contemporary music theatre — premieres and rarely performed works from history, from a Low German fairy tale to what is probably the first opera in the German language.
International residencies — singers from across Europe come to Oldenburg to work together on what will be heard here for the first time.
Unusual places — the Kulturetage, the castle, the churches of the region: spaces never intended as stages, and all the stronger for it.
How we work
The association is recognised as charitable and is funded entirely through grants, ticket income, donations and membership fees. There are no fixed structures that cost money before a production exists — every project is financed and accounted for on its own.
In 2025, with the Münstermann Festival, the association managed a larger multi-funder budget for the first time. The audit of that funding was approved by NDR in March 2026 without objection.
